Year 6 STEM and Enterprise
Year 6 were set the challenge to achieve the following brief:
Design and make Christmas gifts that can be sold on Enterprise day. The products needed to be:
We decided on three different Christmas gift ideas: Christmas cameo-inspired brooches, wooden peg dolls and personalised Christmas paper wreaths.
The children got straight to work researching existing products, carrying our market research in other year groups and designing their own products. They even carried out practice runs for each product using toilet rolls, scrap paper for their origami folding and playdough! We had great fun and developed our DT and Enterprise skills.
We also spent time learning about financial awareness and created a business plan together which was handed in for approval to Mrs Price - the school's Business Manager. Thankfully, our calculations were accurate and we were granted our loan of £100 for resources.
Aila Z and Oliver S were superstars and provided their own Christmas costumes to become Year 6 mascots! They did a marvellous job of visiting classrooms and children in the hall on Enterprise day and really helped to advertise and drum-up business. Check out their amazing costumes below and in the slideshow.
We discovered talented jingle writers, poster and advert makers and one group of boys showed their entrepreneurial skills by creating a lucky dip box which proved to be very popular and really added to the Year 6 profits! Well done boys.
On Enterprise day, as many Year 6 children as possible had the chance to sell and we had completely sold out by lunchtime! After taking off our expenses and float, Year 6 made a healthy profit of £339.64.
We had a wonderful time researching, planning, practising, advertising, selling and evaluating our project. We are looking forward to deciding on how best to spend our year group profit in school.
