Reading in Year 5

Library - Our weekly library sessions will take place on a Thursday afternoon.

The children will be encouraged to select a fiction and a non-fiction book to take home to read. When they have completed their books, they will have the opportunity to change their books in their next library session.

Oxford Owl reading books. During the library sessions, the children will also have the chance to choose and change their Oxford Owl reading books. Log books will continue to go home with the children (as in previous years).

Reading for Pleasure - Year 5 "Recommended Reads"

We have "picked the brains" of a local independent book shop - H & H Spalding Books (based in Barton Under Needwood) - regarding sourcing some fantastic books to broaden the reading choices of our children and hopefully to inspire a lifelong love of reading. The teachers really enjoyed diving into the book boxes which Spalding Books sent to us! Together they have carefully selected 10 books which will be available for your child to take home over the course of each year.

Please ask your child to share the texts they bring home with you. It might be that they require you (or another family member) to read the books to them to fully access and appreciate the reading experience. Finding some special one-to-one reading time in you day, week or when relaxing on holiday will certainly help to enhance your child's love of reading.

Once completed, the books can be returned to class so that your child can take out the next one. You do not need to purchase the books yourselves. However, parents often ask for book recommendations so please find below the names of our "Recommended Reads" suggested by the book shop for your child's age range.

Many thanks in advance for your support with this exciting initiative and happy reading!
