Year 5

Welcome to Year 5 Class!

Your teacher will very soon be filling this page with exciting class news, pictures of things we’ve done and more.

Do you have any ideas for this page? Why not let your Teacher know!

Have you seen the Kids’ Zone? Play games and visit some cool websites. You can vote for your favourites.

Mr Pearce, Miss Stevens, Mrs Hitchman and Ms Dancer are all very much looking forward to working with you all over the next academic year!

It is our mission as teachers in Year 5 to guide and support you all to reach your true potential through a range of exciting activities, engaging lessons and interesting trips that will help to develop your skills and understanding.

We hope that you will enjoy your time in Year 5 and below is some basic information to help you through the year.

Homework will be sent home every Friday in a personal, yellow learning log and will focus on Maths and English or Topic. We expect the learning log to be returned by no later than the following Wednesday to give the teachers sufficient time to see the work that has been completed. Please don't forget to come and see your teacher as soon as possible if you are struggling with any homework so that we can support you.  In the back of your homework books, you will also find the Year 5/6 high frequency words and a copy of the times table grid.  Your times tables extremely important, so try to test yourself on a different table each week!

Spellings will also be sent home inside the learning log and spelling tests will take place every Friday at the start of the literacy session.

It is also an expectation that you read/read out loud to an adult at home for at least 10 minutes every night

Outdoor P.E will take place on a Monday afternoon (weather depending) and therefore can you please make sure that if you take your kit home on Friday that you bring it back into school on Monday morning. If you forget your kit more than once, a letter will be sent home to alert your parents that it must be in for the following session. Can you also remember (especially if you have pierced ears) that all jewellery must be removed before a P.E lesson starts.

5P will begin a 6 week course of swimming lessons at Streetly school every Thursday afternoon during the second half of the Autumn term. Please don't forget that you will need to bring your own packed lunch or order a sandwich from the dinner menu for that particular day if you normally stop school dinners.

Useful websites

Don't forget that Bug Club is up and running and you should all have been given your usernames and log ons.

Also, some weeks your maths homework will refer to the Mangahigh website where your teachers will have allocated some games and activities linked to the work you have done that particular week! Again you should all have your usernames and log ons stuck in the front of your learning logs.

If you do misplace or forget your password, please see your teacher.
Autumn Term Topic

‘Fascinating Pharaohs’

We will be looking at lots of information all about Ancient Egypt and the key people involved in it's history. In the meantime, why don't you check out the following websites to have a little look at the sorts of objectives we will be covering...
Planetarium Visit
19th October 2015

To support our Fascinating Pharaoh's topic (along with our ‘Space’ focus in Science) we were lucky to receive a visit from Dave Buttery and his mobile planetarium.  During their time in the dome, the children learnt about our solar system, Astrology and were treated to a wonderful video showing a time lapse video of the ISS orbiting the planet. During his time with us, Dave also explained the stars and how the Ancient Egyptians used the stars and planets in their everyday lives.

Well, after a great Autumn term, we moved onto our next fantastic topic in Spring...

This topic took us through a portal to a magical island.  Here the children:

  • Created some fantastic works of fiction
  • Learnt about maps and 6-figure grid references
  • Produced amazing monochromatic artwork using 2-point perspective
  • Designed and described their own Island

During this term we also took part in:

Our annual Enterprise day at Aldridge Secondary School - Once again the children were brilliant and really threw themselves into the challenges.
Special mention to Maya Patel who won 'Pupil of the Day'!!!

The Eistedfodd Festival - Thank you to all our children across the three classes, who, sung, danced and performed their little hearts out.

We were also lucky to have support in PE to help us with dance.  The children created some fantastic sequences to show Lucy's arrival in Narnia.

Coming up in this summer term, we have:

PE - We will be benefiting from cricket coaching and also gymnastic coaching.

Summer Term Topic...

This topic is already under way and the children have been learning about:

  • The origins of the Black Death
  • Its journey to Europe
  • The effects it had on the population
  • The gruesome details of its symptoms

As part of this topic we will be heading to Warwick Castle on Monday 23rd May!
